SNAP: save your game before life hits pause
You're deep in a task. The phone rings, or your kid walks in, or your brain just decides it's done for now. Twenty minutes later you sit back down and stare at the screen like you've never seen it before. What was I doing? Where was I? Why does this file have three tabs open that make no sense? That blank feeling isn't laziness, and trying harder won't fix it. Your working memory just never got the chance to save its place.
Think about an old video game with no autosave. You play for an hour, get interrupted, and come back to find the console off. You don't resume where you left off. You start the level over, or you wander around trying to remember what you were doing before you can even begin. ADHD working memory works the same way during a task switch. For many ADHD brains, an interruption can feel like it erased everything you were holding. The task itself is still fine. Your memory of exactly where you were inside it is gone.
Why the restart costs more than the interruption
This is the part almost nobody talks about when they teach task management. Everyone covers how to start a task. Break it down, time-block it, use a timer, pick a tiny first step. All useful. But almost nobody teaches what to do in the ten seconds before you get pulled away, so that coming back doesn't cost you a fresh cold start every single time. That gap is one of the least-taught steps in the whole ADHD-productivity world, and it may well cost you more than the interruptions themselves.
A CHI 2026 co-design study with 20 ADHD university students and 5 experts looked at what people with ADHD actually need from AI support, and landed on three things: help noticing what task you're even on, help getting through the task once you've started it, and help with the emotional static that comes with both. That middle piece, getting back into a task after it's already started, is exactly where the restart tax lives. Most tools help you begin. Almost none of them help you resume.
The fix doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to take less time than the interruption itself. That's the whole idea behind SNAP, the fourth step in the Yap Method. YAP dumps the mess out loud. MAP sorts it into five piles. TAP picks one tiny action. SNAP saves your spot before you walk away, so the next time you sit down, you're not starting the level over. You're pressing continue.
The four lines that save your game
A SNAP card is four short lines. You can write it in a notes app, say it out loud into an AI tool, or scribble it on a sticky note. The format matters more than the tool.
What I did. One line, plain and specific. Not "worked on the project." Something like "drafted the first two sections of the script." Specific enough that future you doesn't have to guess.
Where I stopped. The exact spot, not the general area. "Mid-sentence in the third section, right after the bullet list" beats "somewhere in the middle" every time. This is the line people skip, and it's the one that saves the most time.
Next tiny tap. Not the next big step. The next physical action, small enough to do in two to ten minutes. "Reread the last two sentences out loud" is a tap. "Finish the script" is not.
Note to future me. A short message, permission or warning, whatever future you needs to hear. "You don't need to redo the intro, it's already fine" saves you from re-litigating a decision you already made.

The interruption doesn't erase your progress. It erases your memory of where the progress was. SNAP writes that memory down before it disappears.
Why this is the step nobody teaches
Most ADHD productivity advice is front-loaded. It's all about getting started: better morning routines, better first steps, better ways to beat the initial wall. That's real and it matters. But a full day has dozens of small interruptions in it, not just one big morning wall. Every single one of those is a chance to lose your place, and almost no system tells you what to do in the moment right before you get pulled away. SNAP is the missing back half of the routine, the part that protects the work you already did instead of only helping you start new work.
A 2026 study of 22 ADHD adults found that task management for ADHD brains tends to be social rather than solo. People borrow structure from other people, body doubling, check-ins, someone just being aware of what they're working on. Some participants said reporting progress to an AI already gave them enough of a "someone's there" feeling to help them keep going. A SNAP card works on a similar principle, except the someone you're reporting to is a future version of yourself. You're borrowing structure from your own past self instead of losing it to the gap between now and later.
How to actually use it
You don't need an app for this, though a voice-to-text tool can make it faster if typing four lines feels like its own barrier. Say the four lines out loud, or type them fast and messy. Don't polish them. If a ninety-second SNAP card saves you even a few minutes on the restart, it has already paid for itself.
Write it the moment you sense the interruption coming, not after you've already been pulled away. If the doorbell just rang, you have maybe five seconds before your attention is gone. That's enough time for four short lines if you've practiced the format a few times. And no tool, AI or otherwise, has been shown to improve ADHD outcomes on its own. What a SNAP card can do is reduce the cognitive load of restarting, so the next tap is smaller and the whole task feels less like starting over from zero every time life hits pause.
